Tomorrow’s game has got me thinking. How many of you would like our club to be like tomorrow’s opponents? I don’t mean play in a light blue kit and have The Gallagher brothers as supporters. What I mean is have millions perhaps billions of pounds at our disposal burning a hole in our manager’s pocket.
Would you like a Carlos Tevez around our great club? The reason I say “a” Carlos Tevez is because Carlos is what I like to call a footballing mercenary. He’ll go to whoever will pay him the most. The only reason he is still at Manchester City is that no other club can match the financial package he is currently on. Even Alex Ferguson would not be held to ransom!
Forgive me, I digress.
There is no doubt that Man City have some fantastic players. Joe Hart is by far one of the best Goalkeepers in the world at the moment but Wojciech is well on his way to being on that same level as Joe and it is his regular appearances as Arsenal’s number one that have helped him progress.
Micah Richards has been linked with The Arsenal before and in my opinion is one of the best English defenders currently playing. His speed and power is second to none but would he dislodge Bacary Sagna from the right back position. I don’t think so.
James Milner, Adam Johnson, Gareth Barry and Nigel De Jong are all good midfielders but would they be preferred to Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Alex Song, The Ox et al? Again, I don’t think so.
Genuinely, the only two players from the current City squad who I believe would significantly improve The Arsenal are Kun Aguero and Yaya Toure. Aguero is one of the finest strikers currently plying their trade in the Premier League. He has the ability of a Tevez but the attitude of a Michael Owen.
Yaya Toure is a player who we once had on trial and amongst his closest allies, Arsene may even admit, the one that got away. He is strong, quick and has great control of the ball. I perceived him to be predominantly a defensive player when he was with Barcelona but his attacking play for Man City this year has been equally impressive.
David Silva and Vincent Kompany are without doubt quality players but I’m not entirely sure they would improve our side. I believe Jack Wilshere will play in the attacking midfield role that Silva occupies for City and Kompany would struggle to displace Vermaelen and Koscielny.
I don’t intend to wholly offend City and it is obvious their squad is effective as they currently sit 13 points above us and are second in the Premier League. The trouble is, for every Kun Aguero you have a Mario Balotelli, for every Joe Hart you have a Wayne Bridge, for every Yaya Toure you have a Roque Santa Cruz.
Mario Balotelli is supremely talented but would we want him unsettling our team at The Emirates?
Would we want to be paying the bulk of the wages of Wayne Bridge, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz while they ply their trade, temporarily, at other clubs? I know we currently have a high number of players out on loan to various clubs but I would imagine their wages are significantly less than the aforementioned trio.
The Arsenal are by no means a poor club. Depending on what rumours you listen to we have anywhere between £10m and £100m available in our transfer kitty. There are some that believe that the fact that we don’t spend millions of pounds on players is because we don’t have the money. Personally I don’t believe that. We don’t overspend on players because we are just not that kind of club. Arsene, rightly or wrongly, is a firm believer in nurturing young talent, not specifically “born” at the club but “raised” there and taught to play the Arsenal way. Various clubs will talk about “their way”, a style of play supposedly linked to their club and continued through the ages. Hammers will often talk about the West Ham way of playing but your guess is as good as mine on that one. Barcelona have a style, like many other things, they stole it from us.
Everyone knows The Arsenal Way.
A lot of people will disagree with me on this one. They think that we should spend, spend, spend but I implore you to think for a second..... What if we were City?
